I wrote about the SPS Trekking Club and their annual function that I attended last year in April 2011 (see the post here). A couple of weeks ago, I again got the opportunity to visit SPS club in Mingora(Swat) to attend their annual gathering. It was a great event as always where I got a chance to meet many great trekkers from Swat, to learn from their experiences and to get to know about their upcoming plans.
Event started with the reports about main activities of last year. Darkot Pass was the main trek arranged by SPS club. Muhammad Ishaq briefed members about the trek. Dr. Abdul Hadi, who is one of the old members of SPS trekking club, lead our group for Biafo Hispar expedition in 2011. He gave a detailed account of the trek and his experiences of managing and leading it. Trekkers Meetup event that we did in Islamabad also came under discussion in which SPS participated in the form of a presentation on Darkot pass.
An important part of this event was cabinet election which gets reelected every year. Members voted to choose their new cabinet.. Mr. Syed Munawwar Shah and Mr. Abdul Aleem got reelected as president and general secretary of the club for the year 2012-2013.
The most exciting part of the event was selection of the next destination. After much of the debates and discussions, it was decided that unlike every year, SPS club will manage two treks this year one for the short duration and one for the long duration. For short duration trek, SPS will do a very exciting trek from Tangir valley in Kohistan to Phander village in Ghizer. This area has been very less explored by outsiders and it certainly is a golden opportunity for people who want to be there. Going with SPS certainly brings an advantage of having locals on your side. For the long plan, SPS will do the challenging Chillinji pass trek that connects Chapursan valley to Ishkoman valley. Both of the treks will be done in the month of July. For more details and updates about these SPS events, following the facebook event page here.
